FAQs

Is TNHSD affiliated with a political party?

TNHSD is officially aligned with Democratic Party values and is part of the national High School Democrats of America network. However, we are not required to follow or agree with all pieces of the Democratic Party’s platform.

Who is allowed to join TNHSD?

Any high school student in Tennessee who identifies as a Democrat can join. Whoever wants to get involved in progressive political action is welcome—no experience required!

Is there a chapter at my school?

There might just be! Check on our website to see if your county has an active chapter, and check your own school to see if it has a school chapter. If not, we’ll help you start one.

How do I start a chapter?

It's easy! You just need a few fellow interested students, and we’ll walk you through the process, provide resources, and connect you with a Regional Director to help every step of the way. Fill out the form on our website or on social media, or email us to get started!

What’s the difference between TNHSD and HSDA?

TNHSD is the Tennessee state chapter of the High School Democrats of America (HSDA), a national organization that connects student organizers from all over the country. TNHSD focuses on local issues and organizing here in Tennessee while working in coordination with HSDA’s national efforts.

I have an idea or want to help–what should I do?

We love that! Reach out to us on social media, email (tennessee@hsdems.org), or on our website, and share what’s on your mind. Whether it’s an event, campaign, or just a really creative idea, we want to support you in making it happen.

How can I support TNHSD if I’m not a student?

Parents, alumni, community members, and educators are encouraged to support our work! You can donate here, help spread the word, or become an advisor for a chapter in your area.

Will there be canvasing or doorknocking?

The most effective, community based way to impact your local area is by canvassing and doorknocking. Sometimes we’re asked if this is legal or is it soliciting - it is completely legal - because our interaction is not selling anything it’s informing them of their local issues, an upcoming election, or a candidates campaign.

Should I be concerned for my safety?

When it comes to rallies, we’re not just showing up in an unsafe way. Each rally has a legal permit for private or public property which guarantees us security via state/local police or is provided by the property itself. Please reach out if you have any additional questions.

Are there advisors or guardians involved?

There’s always someone over 18 acting as an advisor or guardian to the HSDems at events and in-person activities.

What Can I Do If I’m not 18?

Everything! Parents have legal authority, but your time and energy is yours to use with principal or guardian permission.
